Anthropic's Claude for Startups program gives any company founded in the last five years a free year of Claude Team, $1,000 in API credits, and $45,000 in partner deals. No investors required. My bootstrapped company was approved. Most decisions come back within minutes. This guide covers what you actually get, who qualifies, the application that works, and how to spend the credits before they expire.

What You Get: The Full Breakdown

API credits$1,000 to use against the Anthropic API
Partner deals$45,000+ in credits and discounts across partner tools
Applied AI office hoursAccess to Anthropic's Applied AI team

The partner deals include tools like ElevenLabs and others across the AI stack. These are working credits, not free trials.

One thing to understand before you apply: the $1,000 in API credits expires after 6 months. The Claude Team plan stays for the full year. Just the credits have the shorter window. Start using them from day one. Do not let them sit.

Step One: Check If You Qualify

The requirements are straightforward:

No investors required. No revenue threshold. My company is fully bootstrapped and was approved. The program is designed for founders who are actively building with AI, not evaluating it.

The one requirement that trips most applicants: the email address. Apply with your company domain. A personal Gmail or Yahoo address will slow down your application or block it entirely. If your company is registered as an LLC, use the email on that domain. This detail matters more than anything else in the form.

Step Two: Write the Application Description

This is the part most guides skip. The description field on the application asks how your company uses AI. This is not a formality.

Anthropic reads it. Write three specific sentences, not a mission statement.

What does not work:

"We are an AI-first company building innovative solutions powered by machine learning."

That sentence tells Anthropic nothing. It sounds like every other application.

What works:

"We use Claude Code to build and maintain client automations. Our team runs three autonomous agents daily through the Claude API for email triage, lead qualification, and reporting. We plan to use the API credits to expand the agent layer to five additional workflows in the next 90 days."

That description tells Anthropic you are already building, what you are building, and what you will build next. Three sentences. Specific. Done.

The rule: mention at least one tool you use, one workflow you have running, and one thing you are planning to build. If you cannot write three specific sentences, you may not be "actively building" in the way the program intends. That is worth knowing before you apply.

Step Three: Submit and What Happens Next

  1. Go to anthropic.com/startups and find the Claude for Startups application.
  2. Enter your company email. Company domain only.
  3. Paste your three-sentence description.
  4. Submit. Most applicants get a decision within a few minutes. Some take up to a day.
  5. Accept via the email you receive. Credits and seats activate immediately.

Once accepted, you access credits and team seats through your Anthropic console at console.anthropic.com. Partner deal codes arrive as separate coupon codes in the welcome email. Do not let the welcome email go unread.

Step Four: Use the API Credits in the First 30 Days

$1,000 in credits sounds like a lot. If you are calling Opus-level models on real workloads, it goes fast. Use them to build one workflow that generates clear value, so paying for the API after the credits expire is an obvious decision.

Automate one repeating task. Pick the thing someone on your team does manually every day. Build an agent to do it instead. Two hours a week saved over a year is 100 hours returned to the business. This is where API credits pay for themselves.

Add one AI-powered feature your clients can see. Internal experiments are invisible. A client-facing feature that produces visible output builds trust faster than any pitch. Start simple. An automated summary, a smart response, a report that used to take three hours. Even one feature is enough to change how clients perceive the product.

Run Claude Code on your codebase. If you have a technical product, use the free Claude Code access to audit your existing code, add tests, or ship a feature you have been postponing. Claude Code calls the API. Your credits offset the cost directly.

Get your full team running Claude on real work. You have five Team seats. Use all five. Get every seat running Claude on actual tasks within the first week. The habits built now carry forward after the free year. A team that uses Claude on real workflows extracts ten times more value than one that used it for demos.

Rule of thumb: if you are not sure what to build first, pick the task that takes someone on your team more than two hours a week. That is the one to automate.

Step Five: Redeem the Partner Deals the Same Day

Do not wait on this. Some partner deal codes expire even if you never use them. Redeem them the day you receive the welcome email.

Partner typeWhat to pay attention to
ElevenLabsVoice generation for agents, demos, and video content. Useful if you are building any voice-powered product or creating content.
Cloud infrastructureCompute and hosting credits. Use these to host anything you build with the API credits. Hosting costs are a real drain on bootstrapped companies.
Developer toolsUseful if they are already in your stack. Skip anything you would not use without the credit. Free credits do not justify adopting a tool you do not need.

Set a calendar reminder for the expiry date of each deal. Check your welcome email for the complete list. Some deals expire in 30 days. Others run longer. The reminder takes 90 seconds to set and it saves real money.

The Honest Limits

$45,000 in partner deals is not $45,000 in cash. It is credits and discounts across tools you may or may not need. Some deals are genuinely useful. Others are credits for products outside your stack. Audit the list on day one, use what applies, and skip the rest. Do not build new workflows around tools just because the credit is free.

The Applied AI office hours are not unlimited support. Treat them as a resource to activate once you have a real, specific question about your build. Not a general support channel.

The free year has an end date. Claude Team pricing after the free period runs approximately $30 per user per month. Five seats at that rate is $150 a month. If you build real workflows during the free year, that cost is easy to justify. The goal is to arrive at month 13 with enough working automation that renewing is an obvious decision.

The API credits do not roll over. Unused credits at the 6-month mark disappear. Build something in the first 30 days so you are not scrambling to spend credits in month 5.
