You got sold a lie. The story online says AI belongs to people who write code, and the way in is a $2,000 course from someone with a ring light. Both halves are wrong.
The best training for the highest-paid job in AI is free. Most of it comes straight from Anthropic, the company that builds Claude. And the job itself rewards people who cannot code at all.
Here is the whole path. Eleven courses, three tiers, in the order I would take them. No gate, no upsell, nothing held back for a paid tier.
What a Forward Deployed Engineer Actually Does
It is a translator, not a programmer.
A Forward Deployed Engineer walks into a company, finds where AI actually helps, and gets it working. That is the job. Someone sits between the business and the tool and makes the two fit. They watch how a team really works, spot the task that eats every Tuesday, and point AI at that exact task until it holds.
Notice what is not in that description. No computer science degree. No writing code all day. The title has the word engineer in it, which scares people off, and that is a mistake in your favor. The scarcest skill here is not syntax. It is knowing what these tools can do and being able to aim them at a real problem in front of a real team.
The pay follows the scarcity. The roles that carry this shape pay $200K and up, because almost nobody can do the translating part well.
Why Non-Technical Is the Advantage
Here is the part nobody says out loud.
The consultants I have watched make the most money from AI are deeply non-technical. Their edge is not code. It is that they can walk into a room full of skeptical people and explain, in plain language, what a skill is and why it matters for the invoices piling up on someone's desk.
A coder can build. Fewer people can look at a messy business and see the one place AI belongs. Rarer still is the person who can then teach a team to use it without the team quietly going back to the old way the moment the consultant leaves. That last skill is the whole game, and it has nothing to do with a terminal.
If you have ever run a team, sold something, or untangled a broken process by hand, you already own the harder half of this job. The tool part is the part that is free to learn.
Why the Course Is Free When Everyone Else Charges
The reason AI still feels out of reach is simple. A lot of people online make a living selling you the course to reach it. The paywall is the product.
You do not need them. Anthropic publishes its own training, most of it free, most of it with a certificate you can put on LinkedIn. The company that builds the tool wants more people who can use it well, so it teaches you for nothing. That is the material below. The paid courses are reselling a slower version of it.

Start with Claude 101 and do not talk yourself out of it because the name sounds basic. The people who fail at this later are almost always the ones who skipped the base to look clever.
The one to sit with is AI Fluency: Framework and Foundations. It teaches you to delegate to AI, describe what you want, and judge whether the output is any good. Judging output is the muscle that separates someone who gets value from AI and someone who pastes a confident wrong answer into a client email. Do Introduction to Agent Skills first, before anything else in this tier. A skill is a saved, reusable set of instructions that turns a one-off prompt into something a whole team can run the same way every time. The moment you can build one and explain it in a sentence, you are ahead of most people charging money for this.
Claude Code in Action and Introduction to Model Context Protocol are the two that make people freeze, because they sound like developer territory. They are less scary than the names suggest. Claude Code lets Claude do work across your files and tools instead of just answering in a chat window. Model Context Protocol is how you connect Claude to real data, so it acts on a business instead of talking about one in the abstract. You are not being asked to become a programmer. You are being shown how to wire the tool into a workplace.
The two hands-on options round it out. Anthropic Courses on GitHub is a set of notebooks that need a Claude API key to run, so keep that for when you want to get your hands dirty. The tools here are engine-neutral by design. Learn the shape of the work, and the same instincts carry whether a client runs Claude, Codex, or something else next year. You are learning to point AI at problems. The logo on the tool is the part that changes.
The Mistake That Keeps People Stuck
Courses are useless if they stay courses.
The trap is comfort. Watching lessons feels like progress and asks nothing of you. You finish a module, close the laptop, and the next morning your business runs exactly as it did before. A month of that and you have a stack of certificates and zero proof.
The fix is uncomfortable on purpose. Take one thing you learned and point it at a real problem this week. Your own work, a friend's business, or a team drowning in manual tasks. Build the smallest thing that removes the most annoying step. It will be rough. Ship it anyway.
Training a team to use AI well does more for a company than most complicated automation projects. That sentence is the entire career in one line. The person who can make a team actually change how they work is worth more than the person with the most elegant workflow nobody adopts.
What This List Will Not Do For You
Be honest with yourself before you start.
Finishing every course does not make you hireable. It makes you educated, which is not the same thing. Nobody pays $200K for a certificate. They pay for the person who walked into a room, found the expensive problem, and made AI eat it. That evidence only comes from doing the work on something real.
The free window on a few of these will not last forever. Beta programs end and course lineups get reshuffled. If one on this list is free today, take it while it is.
And the role is genuinely new. The title, the pay, and the exact boundaries are still settling. That is why the door is open. Established, tidy professions do not pay this well to non-technical newcomers. The mess is the opportunity, and it will not stay messy for long.
If You Only Do One Thing This Week
Finish one course. Not three. One.
Start with Claude 101, then Introduction to Agent Skills. The day you can build one working skill and explain it in a sentence, you are past most of the people selling this. Then find one real problem and point what you learned at it.
That is the loop. Finish one course. Build one skill. Solve one real problem. Repeat. Nobody told you the highest-paid job in AI was free to train for and open to people who cannot code. Now you know. The only thing left is to start, and the worst case is you spent a week learning something you can use for the rest of your career.
